Start going on a weekly shop instead of frequent trips. Even with a varied diet it’s not hard to make a decent estimation of what you’ll need for a given week. So make your shopping list and stick to it. This is important if you want to save money on food.
You can save yourself some time as well as money this way. It might seem like you’re adding time making a list but think again. Subtract the time you spend aimlessly wandering the aisles and you’ll surprise yourself. You could even go as far as planning your route to prevent impulse spends.
2. Stalk the Sales and Bulk Buy
This one might seem obvious it has to be in the top tips for saving money on food. Most of the time when we’re buying ‘sale’ items, the stores are still making an extra sale. Once you have a list, you’ll start to have an idea about how much you actually spend. So when your items come up you can raid the shelves. Pick the items you can get frozen or tinned and see how much you can reduce your monthly spend. Simple. Just make sure you don’t over do it and buy 300 tins of spaghetti hoops.
3. Be a Savvy Shopper
The time has past when own-brand products were so inferior they weren’t worth it. Nowadays, most supermarkets have reasonable imitations so drop the brands where you can. It can pay to shop around too, between stores and between the brands. Look for the independent specialists. Fraternize with farmers at the market. Making your own food is one of the most pleasurable things in the world to do, just be sure to know your limits and you’ll be fine. You’ll save money on food every time you bake a pizza instead of ordering one. Try making enough dinner to have the next day for lunch. Processed and convenience food is not only expensive, it’s also unhealthy. Do your body and your wallet a favour and cut out the ready-meals.
5. Turn Up with Tupperware

We throw away food all the time because there isn’t quite enough to save when really we should just be making a little bit more. As you get to grips with cooking (and your list!) you’ll be able to predict which meals will make a good lunch, or freeze well for later.
